How to find a minyan anywhere in Lakewood (and the rest of New Jersey)
A practical guide to finding a minyan in Lakewood NJ at any hour: the big minyan factories, neighbourhood shuls by nusach, Toms River and Jackson, and how to check times on your phone.
Lakewood has more minyanim per square mile than almost anywhere outside Eretz Yisroel, which is wonderful until you are standing on Route 9 at 2:40 in the afternoon wondering where Mincha is. Here is how to find a minyan in Lakewood fast.
1. Know the "minyan factories"
Several shuls run minyanim back to back for most of the day. If you are not sure where to go, one of these will almost always have a Mincha or Maariv starting within fifteen minutes:
- Bais Medrash Govoha (BMG) – the yeshiva's batei medrash run continuous minyanim around seder times; Mincha and Maariv are easiest for a visitor.
- Sons of Israel / "Chestnut shul" and other large neighbourhood shuls with a posted "minyan board".
- Satmar, Belz and other chassidish shtiblach on the east side, which run late Shacharis and multiple Maariv minyanim.
Posted boards change with the season (sof zman krias shema moves, Mincha moves with shkia), so a board photo from Elul is wrong in Teves.
2. Pick by nusach
Lakewood is mostly Nusach Ashkenaz, with strong Nusach Sfard (chassidish) pockets on the east side and in Westgate, and a growing number of Sephardic minyanim (Eidot HaMizrach) near the Sephardic community center. If nusach matters to you, filter by it instead of walking in and finding out at Kedusha.
3. Outside Lakewood proper
- Toms River – the new developments have their own shuls; minyanim are fewer, so check before you drive.
- Jackson – growing fast; several shuls now run full daily schedules.
- Howell and Manchester – fewer options; plan Mincha around the Lakewood run.
4. Check on your phone
Open Kall Local, choose Lakewood (ZIP 08701 or 08702), tap Shuls, and you get the shuls with nusach and the published Shacharis, Mincha and Maariv times, each with a map link and phone number. Times come from the shuls' own published schedules and public minyan listings, and each entry shows the date it was last checked.
5. Minyan etiquette, briefly
Walk in quietly if davening has started, don't take the seat with the tallis bag on it, and if it is a shtiebel, a few dollars in the pushka on the way out is the right thing.
Quick reference
