A frum family's guide to Boro Park: kosher restaurants, shuls and mikvaos

Boro Park (ZIP codes 11219, 11204 and parts of 11218 and 11230) is the largest chassidish neighbourhood in America, and for a first-time visitor it can feel like a city of its own. Here is the lay of the land.

The avenues

  • 13th Avenue is the main street: seforim stores, clothing, Judaica, bakeries, takeouts and pizza, from about 39th to 55th Street.
  • 16th Avenue is quieter and more chassidish, with shtiblach every block and the big Bobov and Belz presence.
  • 18th Avenue has the supermarkets and the car-friendly stores.
  • New Utrecht Avenue runs under the D train; look for the kosher grocers and butchers along it.

Kosher food

Boro Park has every kind of kosher: fleishig restaurants, dairy cafés, pizza, sushi, Israeli grill, bakeries open at 6 AM and takeouts open until midnight on Thursday. What matters is the hechsher, and in Boro Park that usually means one of the big chassidish hashgachos (CRC/Hisachdus, Volove, Rav Gornish, Nirbater among others) rather than a national symbol. Kall Local lists each restaurant with its hechsher, hours and phone, under Boro Park → Food.

Shuls and minyanim

You will never lack a minyan. The big chassidishe courts (Bobov, Belz, Satmar, Ger, Munkatch, Vizhnitz, Skver, Klausenburg and dozens more) each have a main bais medrash with minyanim from vasikin until late, and there are shtiblach on nearly every block. Nusach Sfard is the default; Nusach Ashkenaz minyanim exist (Young Israel, Agudah shuls) but are the minority. For Shacharis on a weekday, the Bobov and Belz batei medrash on 15th and 16th Avenues run minyanim roughly every quarter hour through the morning.

Mikvaos

Men's mikvaos are attached to most of the large batei medrash and open early. Women's mikvaos are on several quiet side streets and are listed with phone numbers under Mikvah in Kall Local; call ahead for hours, which change with the season.

Gemachs

Boro Park's gemach network is legendary: baby equipment, simcha gowns, medical supplies, tables and chairs, interest-free loans, and chesed organisations like Hatzolah, Chaveirim and Bikur Cholim. Find them by category under Gemachs in Kall Local.

Getting around

The D train (New Utrecht Avenue) and the F train (McDonald Avenue) connect to Manhattan. Parking is tight; most locals walk. Erev Shabbos, 13th Avenue closes to traffic in the last hour before shkia, so plan errands early.

Shopping

Seforim stores and Judaica on 13th Avenue, hats and shtreimels on 13th and 16th, children's clothing everywhere, and the big grocers (and the famous bakeries) near 18th Avenue. Sales and specials are posted under Board in Kall Local when the stores publish them.
