Chasuna invitation wording: a guide in Hebrew, Yiddish and English

A chasuna invitation follows a form that has barely changed in a hundred years, and that is part of its beauty. Here is how to word one so it reads right in Boro Park, Lakewood, Monsey and Yerushalayim, with templates you can copy straight into Kall Simcha.

The parts of a chasuna invitation

  1. Opening line – a pasuk or a short Hebrew phrase. The most common: קול ששון וקול שמחה קול חתן וקול כלה or simply בס"ד at the top.
  2. The parents – both sets, with honorifics. Traditionally the chosson's parents are on the right (Hebrew) or first (English) when they are the hosts of the invitation; many families print one invitation with both sets side by side.
  3. The chosson and kallah – by their Hebrew names, the kallah first in many chassidish circles, the chosson first in others. Follow your family's minhag.
  4. The date – Hebrew date first, English date second, with the day of the week.
  5. The times – Kabbalas Panim, Chuppah, and sometimes Seudah/Dancing.
  6. The hall – name and full address.
  7. A closing line – ברוב עם הדרת מלך or ישמח חתן בכלה and the family names.

Honorifics (the ones people get wrong)

  • הרה"ח ר' – for a chassidish father ("HaRav HaChossid Reb").
  • הרב / הרה"ג – for a rav or a talmid chochom; don't downgrade someone, and don't inflate either.
  • שיחי' / שליט"א / ז"ל / ע"ה – after a name: living (שיחי' or שליט"א) or deceased (ז"ל, ע"ה).
  • תחי' – after a mother's or the kallah's name.
  • שתחי' – also common for the kallah.

Small things that make a big difference

  • Hebrew date first. The English date is a convenience; the Hebrew date is the date.
  • Day of the week. It saves a dozen phone calls.
  • The chuppah time is the real time. Kabbalas panim is when the hall opens; print both.
  • Separate seating is assumed in our circles; no need to print it.
  • Keep it on one card. A chasuna invitation should be read in ten seconds.

Make it in Kall Simcha

Open Kall Simcha, choose Chasuna, pick a design, and type the names. The Hebrew date fills in by itself from the English one, the Hebrew and Yiddish text flips right-to-left properly, and the RSVP link does the headcount for you. Download a print-ready PDF or share on WhatsApp.
