Bar mitzvah, bris and upsherin invitation wording (with Hebrew)

Not every simcha is a chasuna, and each kind has its own feel. Here is the wording that works for the three invitations most families send between the bris and the chasuna.

Bar mitzvah invitation

A bar mitzvah invitation names the bochur, the parents, and usually two events: the Shabbos (kiddush, or an aliyah l'Torah) and the seudah (a weeknight dinner or a Sunday brunch).

Seudas Bar Mitzvah: Sunday, December 27 · 6:30 PM
Lake Terrace Hall, 1690 Oak Street, Lakewood
Tips: print the parsha and the Hebrew date; mention whether the kiddush is in shul or at home; put the seudah on its own line with its own address.

Bris / kiddush

A bris invitation is usually sent the night before, so it is short and goes on WhatsApp. For a girl, the same card becomes a kiddush announcement.

For a kiddush: "invite you to a Kiddush in honour of the birth of our daughter, this Shabbos after davening, at ..."

Upsherin

An upsherin invitation is warm and simple; it is often a mid-week afternoon with family and the boy's cheder rebbi.

Add "Bring a scissor and a bracha" if that is your family's custom, and a line for the peyos cut by the zeide.

The three details every card needs

  1. Hebrew date and day of the week.
  2. Exact address with the shul or hall name (people search by name on their phone).
  3. A time for each event (Shacharis, bris, seudah; kiddush; upsherin).
