Kosher YouTube: how to watch the good parts of YouTube without the rest

Almost every frum family runs into the same question sooner or later: there is real, wonderful content on YouTube — a new niggun from a favourite singer, a Daf Yomi shiur, a Yiddish story for the kids — but YouTube itself was never built with a heimish home in mind. People search for a kosher YouTube because they want the first part without the second.

This guide explains what the problem actually is, what a kosher alternative has to do, and how Kall Video approaches it.

What makes regular YouTube hard for a frum home

The issue is rarely the one video you meant to watch. It is everything around it:

  • Recommendations. The sidebar and the end screen are designed to keep you watching. Start with a Chazzanus clip and within three videos the algorithm can take you anywhere.
  • Thumbnails. Even if every video you choose is fine, the grid of suggestions is not.
  • Comments. A clean video can sit on top of a comment section nobody should be reading.
  • Ads. Pre-roll and banner ads are chosen by an ad system, not by you.
  • Search. A child typing one wrong letter into the search bar sees the whole internet.
  • Shorts. An endless vertical feed is the hardest thing of all to put down.

Filters help, and many families rely on one. But most filters work by blocking or allowing a whole site. YouTube is either open, with all of the above, or closed, with none of the good content either.

What a kosher YouTube alternative needs to do

If you strip the problem down, a kosher way to watch online video needs five things:

  1. A hand-picked library. Only channels that someone has checked, rather than "everything except what got reported".
  2. No open recommendations. What plays next should come from the same approved list, never from an algorithm trained on the whole platform.
  3. No comments and no links out. The video, the title, and nothing that leads somewhere else.
  4. Search that stays inside the library. Typing a name should find approved channels only.
  5. It has to be pleasant. If the kosher option is clumsy, people drift back to the regular app.

How Kall Video works

Kall Video is a free video player built around exactly those rules. It plays videos from an approved list of channels and nothing else.

What is in it. Hundreds of Jewish music channels — from Avraham Fried, MBD and Yaakov Shwekey to Motty Steinmetz, Shulem Lemmer and the Yedidim and Malchus choirs — plus a Torah section with Daf Yomi (MDY with Rabbi Eli Stefansky, Dirshu, Kol Halashon, and a Yiddish Daf Yomi), shiurim and chassidus, a Podcasts section with frum interview shows, live wedding music channels, and kids' programs.

What is not in it. No comments. No "up next" from the wider platform. No links that leave the app. Search only looks inside the approved library, so a typo leads nowhere dangerous.

How it is kept clean. Channels are reviewed before they go in, and some shows are added as a curated list of individual episodes rather than the whole channel, so an unsuitable episode from an otherwise good channel stays out. New uploads from approved channels appear on their own within a few minutes; a channel that changes direction can be removed in one step.

What it costs. Nothing. There is no app to install either: it opens in any browser, and you can add it to your home screen so it behaves like an app.

How to set it up for your family

  1. Open video.kallin1.com on the phone, tablet or computer you want to use.
  2. On iPhone, tap Share → Add to Home Screen. On Android, tap the menu → Install app or Add to Home screen.
  3. If your home uses a filter, ask your filter provider to allow video.kallin1.com (and kallin1.com for the other Kall apps). Because Kall Video only ever plays its own approved list, it is a much smaller thing to allow than YouTube as a whole.
  4. Use the categories — Wedding, Simcha, Slow & Kumzitz, Chassidish, Shabbos, Kids — or the Torah and Podcasts sections to find what you want without searching at all.

Honest limits

No list is perfect. A human has to decide what goes in, and a family's standards differ — some homes are stricter about music, others about kids' programs. Kall Video is a much safer place to watch than open YouTube, but it is not a replacement for a parent's eye or for the guidance of your own Rav. If you see something that does not belong, use the report option and it will be reviewed.

The short version

A "kosher YouTube" is not a filtered copy of YouTube. It is a different shape: a hand-picked library, no algorithm, no comments, no way out. That is what Kall Video is, and it is free to use today.
